How you can prep like a pro
- Extra screenwash and sunglasses? Check! They'll help keep your view clear, even in the brightest sun or dustiest roads.
- Water, water everywhere: Pack enough for you, your crew, and your car. You might need it to top up your coolant if your car overheats.
- Tyre time: Warmer weather can cause blowouts. Look for cuts, punctures, bulges, and check the tread depth. Once you’ve given them the all clear, check the pressure and top up if you need to. And don’t forget to check your spare!
- Air con: If you've got it, get it serviced before a long, hot trip. It might have leaked a bit over the winter and won’t keep you cool like it should.
- Take time to chill out: Make sure your car is comfortably cool before you drive. Heat can cause 'brain fog' and affect your concentration.
What to consider when you’re driving in a heatwave
- Watch those warning lights: If one comes on, pull over safely and check your car's handbook. An overheating warning means your car needs a break.
- Sticky situations: In extreme heat, tarmac can melt. Slow down to handle the sluggish feeling and tricky steering.
- Gone electric? Your EV might not go as far on a single charge in the heat. Give yourself extra time to recharge.
Where should you park in the heat?
- Shaded areas are best to keep your car cool. Look for parking spots under trees or in a garage to keep the inside temperatures down and protect the paint from fading.
- If you can’t find shade, create your own! A sunshade could help reflect sunlight. Place one shiny-side out in your windscreen to help keep some of the heat out.
No matter where you park, remember:
- Never leave people or pets in your car in in warm weather. It could cause serious health risks within minutes.
- Make sure all your windows and doors are closed (and locked) if you’re leaving your car. Your car insurance might not cover your losses when you leave openings for thieves to get in.
