Overheating

Your car can get really hot in the summer. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge and the radiator icon on your dashboard to spot the warning signs that something’s up.

How to fix it: Top up your coolant and check your engine's drive belts to avoid overheating.

Flat tyres

Hotter weather can make existing tyre damage worse - especially if your tyres are under-inflated.

How to fix it: Check your tyre pressure regularly – you can usually do this at petrol stations and garages. You’ll need to top up if they’re underinflated and replace any with cracks or bulges.

Flat or faulty battery

Warm weather can strain your battery. Air con will be an extra drain, as will any gadgets (like sat navs) you’ve got plugged in.

How to fix it: Keep an eye on how many devices you’ve got plugged in, especially if you’re idling in traffic. For extra peace of mind, contact a garage to get your battery checked for any issues.

Low oil pressure

Oil thins in the heat, making it harder to protect your engine. Without the right amount of oil, your engine could seize up and stop working.

How to fix it: Check your oil levels weekly. Remember to do this when you’re parked on even, flat ground. If you need to top it up, don’t exceed the recommended levels for your car.

Running out of fuel

Don't forget to fill up! You’ll need enough fuel to handle with potential traffic jams, plus extra to cope with your air con.

How to fix it: Keep an eye on the fuel gauge during long trips. If you’re venturing somewhere new, a little extra fuel can help if you think you might get lost.

Worn clutch

If your car shudders when you pull away or there's a burning smell, your clutch might be worn. This can get worse in the heat.

How to fix it: If you notice these signs, get your clutch checked at your local garage.

Even with care, breakdowns can happen. Trust your senses and get your car checked if something feels off. And for peace of mind, consider getting car insurance with breakdown cover.
